What's the Color of Matcha?

If you love matcha, you've probably noticed that not all matcha looks the same. Some powders are bright and vibrant, while others are darker or even a little olive-colored.

So... what is the real color of matcha?

(As I write this, my brain has started singing: "What's the color of money? What's the color of money? Don't tell me that you think it's green—I know it's red..." Now it's probably going to be stuck in my head for the next day or two!)

The short answer is: it depends!

Matcha Isn't Just Green

People often say matcha is green, but that's a bit like saying the ocean is blue. Which blue? Sky blue? Navy? Turquoise?Matcha has its own beautiful range of greens.

High-quality ceremonial matcha is usually a bright, fresh jade green. It almost glows when you whisk it into a bowl. Lower-grade matcha is often more olive green or slightly yellow-brown. It still makes delicious drinks and recipes, but it doesn't have quite the same lively appearance.

Does Matcha Have Its Own Official Color?

Surprisingly... no!

There isn't an official "Matcha Green" that everyone agrees on. Unlike colors with official names in design systems, matcha doesn't have one standard shade.

If designers want to use a classic matcha color, they often choose something close to:

Hex: #7BAA3C

It's a fresh, natural green that captures the look of good-quality matcha without looking too bright or artificial.

A Little Japanese Inspiration

In Japan, several traditional colors remind people of fresh matcha:

  • Moegi-iro – the color of young spring shoots.

  • Wakakusa-iro – the soft green of fresh grass.

  • Uguisu-iro – a gentle olive green inspired by the Japanese bush warbler.

Fresh ceremonial matcha usually sits somewhere between the first two: lively, fresh, and full of springtime energy.

The Matcha Test

Here's a fun little challenge.

Imagine you're standing in front of five bowls of matcha.

One looks almost neon.
One looks like spinach soup.
One is brownish.
One is dull olive.
And one shines with a rich, vibrant jade green.

Which one would most matcha lovers reach for?

The glowing jade green, of course! It often suggests carefully grown tea leaves, gentle shading before harvest, and careful stone grinding.

So... What Color Is Matcha?

If we had to pick just one answer, we'd say:

Matcha is the color of fresh spring leaves with a touch of sunshine.

Or, if you're speaking the language of computers:

Matcha Green: #7BAA3C

Not too dark.
Not too yellow.
Not too bright.

Just the kind of green that makes you smile before you've even taken the first sip.

My Sewing and Embroidery Thread recommandations:

If you're a sewist or embroiderer and you'd love to capture that beautiful matcha green in thread, I'd recommend Madeira Rayon "Avocado" 1169 for embroidery. It's a lovely, fresh green that reminds me of a good bowl of ceremonial matcha.

For regular sewing, Gütermann Sew-All Thread #582 is a great match. Of course, every screen (and every batch of matcha!) looks a little different, but these are the shades I'd happily reach for.
