DIY Firewood Carrier Bag – Free Pattern
A firewood carrier bag is a practical bag you can use to carry firewood from your wood storage to the stove. It’s a roll-up bag where you place the logs, lift it easily, and carry it using sturdy wooden handles. If you burn wood, this bag is both fun and incredibly useful!
Materials for the Firewood Carrier Bag:
-
The bag is made of canvas.
The canvas fabric, the bag straps, and the fun label were purchased at Budgetstoffen. -
The embroidery pattern can be bought here: Lumberjack Embroidery.
p.s. If you don’t have an embroidery machine, you can add a fun appliqué or keep the bag as minimalistic as possible.
Sewing Pattern:
The sewing pattern is quite simple. Follow the photos below, and you’ll be able to make this carrier.
Fabric Dimensions:
- 120 x 40 cm: Cut 2 pieces of canvas (base)
- 10 x 24 cm: Cut 4 pieces of canvas (handles)
For the wooden handles, you can use a broomstick or something slightly thicker, like a wooden curtain rail. Alternatively, you can buy a piece of wood that feels comfortable in your hand or use sturdy branches.
Make sure the wooden sticks are 6 cm shorter (3 cm on each side) than the 40 cm width of the bag, or you won’t be able to fit them between the handles.
How to Make the Firewood Carrier Bag:
-
Sew the two fabric pieces together along the long sides, right sides facing in. Leave a small opening so you can turn the bag right side out later.
-
Now, create the small fabric strips where the wooden handles will go. Reinforce these strips with extra bag straps for added strength.
-
Sew the small fabric strips together at one end (right sides facing in) and turn them right side out.
-
Place the fabric strips for the handles at the top (short sides of the bag body) and pin them in place. Check with the wooden stick to ensure the spacing is correct; otherwise, the sticks won’t fit. Now, sew the top edges closed.
-
Turn the entire bag right side out and press or iron it well. Close the opening by hand.
-
Topstitch around the entire bag with extra-strong thread.
-
Add an extra bag strap closure on the inside to keep the wood securely in place when you set the bag down with the wood inside.
