The Story
The dragonflies have discovered a bowl filled with green liquid. We can’t blame them for being puzzled.
Is this a mini pond?
A mini Zen garden effort?
Can they land and drink?
Hunt for tiny bits of food?
The dragonflies can’t make up their minds. When one muses that perhaps it’s a drink for humans, we overhear them discussing:
'If that’s the case, humans have finally become wiser, don't you all think?'
'Indeed, instead of those muddy liquids they call tea and coffee, they’ve turned to pond water'.
'Well done, humans'.
The Drawing
I start with a sketch followed by a graphite drawing on Arches Art Paper. This monochromatic drawing must meet my highest standards and include all the details.
After that, I grab for my gouache or water-paint colours. I then add layer upon layer until the painting is finished. I use dull and pearly colours, especially for the dragonflies to enhance their translucent wings and their shiny bodies.
For Kintsugi enthusiasts, you have spotted the repaired matcha bowl? Kintsugi, is a traditional Japanese craft of repairing broken pottery by mending the cracks with a special lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. I have used thick gold paint to get that extra effect; the gold lacquer is clearly visible and enjoyable.
Off to the Printer
When I am happy with the result, I start thinking what I will do with my painting. In this case, I already knew as it is my second painting in the Matcha Musings Series. A professional printer will print 50 cards on premium paper. I have chosen the option to turn this drawing into a square postal card to be used for a note(to a friend or oneself.
Practical Art
I like my artwork being used as practical art instead of being stored away in my large portfolio archive. It delights me when people find joy with my art and use it to brighten their day.
