Wall Art Commissions – When a Wall Hanging Becomes a Story

Published on 10 September 2026 at 11:41

A wall hanging can be many things.

It can be a beautiful piece of textile art for your home. It can be a memory, a landscape, a favourite animal or a very personal idea. It can be colourful and playful, or quiet and almost minimalist. But what if a wall hanging could also tell a story?

That is exactly what we love about custom wall art commissions at Handmade Luxury Home.

We can create a wall hanging especially for you, starting with your idea and turning it into a completely handmade piece of textile art.

Every part can be designed and made by hand: the fabrics, the composition, the appliqué, the embroidery, the layers, the finishing and even the little details that you may discover only when you look more closely. And sometimes, there can even be a secret.

A little squirrel in an autumn forest

One of our favourite examples is this little autumn wall hanging.

The idea was simple and charming: an autumn scene with a squirrel sitting beside a tree, surrounded by leaves. But we did not want to make a flat picture. We wanted the scene to feel alive.

Different fabrics were carefully chosen for the background, the tree, the squirrel and the leaves. Several layers were placed on top of each other to create a subtle three-dimensional effect.

The squirrel itself is made from fabric and decorated with embroidery. The leaves have their own shapes, textures and embroidered details. The tree has a very different texture from the background, making it stand out from the rest of the composition.

Patchwork, appliqué, embroidery, and careful layering all come together in one small piece of textile art.

The result is decorative, but it is also something you can explore.

Look closely — there is a secret in the tree

Here is our favourite part.

There is a small pocket in the tree.

Inside it, a little embroidered acorn is hidden.

This tiny detail changes the whole character of the wall hanging.

For a child, it is no longer simply something hanging on the wall. It becomes something to discover.

Where is the acorn?

Is it inside the tree?

Has someone already found it? And what about the loose leaf that comes with the wall hanging?

Did it fall from the tree?

Or perhaps it is hiding somewhere behind the wall hanging?

We love these little questions because they make the artwork interactive. The child can look, touch, discover and invent a story around it.

A handmade wall hanging can become part of a child's room rather than simply decoration on the wall.

Made with many different techniques

Creating a piece like this takes time.

The design is developed first, and then the different fabrics and materials have to work together.

We used several textile techniques for this wall hanging, including patchwork, appliqué and embroidery. The different elements were built up in layers, creating depth and texture.

The finishing is also part of the design.

The textile artwork has a carefully made border and a vegan leather frame, with a matching back. It is finished to be a proper piece of wall art rather than simply a piece of fabric attached to a wall.

A collaboration between two makers

There is another special story behind this particular wall hanging.

It was made by both of us.

The wall hanging travelled back and forth between Marga and Paula several times. One of us would work on it, send it to the other, and then the next part of the work would begin.

A little more sewing.

Some embroidery.

Another detail.

A new idea.

And then it travelled back again.

In this way, the squirrel wall hanging became a collaboration. It was not made by one person from beginning to end, but developed through the hands and ideas of two makers.

That is something we value very much about handmade work.

The small imperfections, the decisions made along the way and the time spent creating every detail are part of the story of the finished piece.

Your idea, your wall hanging

The squirrel is only one example.

A commissioned wall hanging can be almost anything you imagine.

Perhaps you would like a nature theme, with birds, flowers, trees or animals.

Perhaps you want something educational, designed especially for a child's room.

Perhaps you have a favourite story or a special memory that you would like to see transformed into textile art.

Perhaps you want something playful and interactive.

Or perhaps you prefer the opposite: simple shapes, quiet colours and minimalist textile art.

You may already have a complete idea, or perhaps you only have the beginning of an idea. We can develop the concept together.

Small or Large; always Handmade

Our custom wall hangings can be made in different sizes, from approximately 60 × 90 cm to larger pieces of around 120 × 90 cm.

The size, colours, fabrics, techniques and details can all be discussed as part of the commission.

And because every piece is made by hand, no two wall hangings will ever be exactly the same.

That is the beauty of commissioning handmade art.

You are not choosing something that thousands of other people already have on their walls.

You are creating something that belongs to your story.

More than decoration

We believe handmade textile art can do more than make a room look beautiful.

It can tell a story.

It can preserve a memory.

It can teach.

It can make a child curious.

It can invite someone to look a little closer.

And sometimes, it can simply make you smile.

A wall hanging can be art.
A wall hanging can be a story.
And sometimes, a wall hanging can hide a little acorn.

That is exactly why we love making them.

Have an idea for a custom wall hanging? We would love to hear it.
