Top 15+ Sustainable Fabrics to Know in 2026

Sustainable fabrics are no longer a small niche in the sewing and fashion world. More and more sewists are thinking about where a fabric comes from, how it was produced, how long it will last, and what happens to it when we no longer need it. But there is an important change taking place.

In 2026, sustainability is no longer only about choosing an "eco-friendly" fabric. We are increasingly talking about durability, circularity, traceability, recycled fibres, and regenerative agriculture.

And this is where things become interesting.

Some of the best sustainable fabrics have actually been around for centuries. Linen, hemp, and wool are not new inventions at all. At the same time, laboratories and textile companies are experimenting with fibres made from agricultural waste, fungi, citrus fruit, bananas and other unexpected materials.

As a textile artist, I find this fascinating. I do not believe that every new material automatically makes a better choice, though. A fabric still has to be suitable for my goal, pleasant to work with and, most importantly, durable.

Here are some of the sustainable fabrics and textile developments I find worth knowing about in 2026.

1. Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is probably one of the easiest sustainable fabrics to recognise.

It is grown without conventional synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and organic farming can support healthier soil and more responsible water management.

Organic cotton can be used for almost anything: dresses, blouses, children's clothing, shirts, underwear and home textiles.

For me, cotton is especially useful when I need a natural fabric that is easy to sew and easy to care for.

Look for certifications such as GOTS when you want stronger guarantees about organic production and processing.

2. Linen

Linen is one of my personal favourites.

It comes from the flax plant and has been used for thousands of years. That alone tells us something about its durability.

Good linen is strong, breathable and comfortable in warm weather. It also becomes softer with use.

It is wonderful for summer dresses, historical clothing, shirts, skirts, table linen and lightweight jackets. And there is something I particularly like about linen: it does not need to pretend to be something else. A beautiful piece of linen looks like linen.

3. Hemp

Hemp is another very old fibre that is enjoying a new life.

The plant grows quickly and generally requires less water and fewer pesticides than many conventional crops. Hemp fibres are strong and can be blended with cotton or other fibres to create different fabrics.

Hemp is particularly interesting for durable clothing, bags, work-wear and home textiles.

The fabric can feel rather firm at first, but good hemp becomes softer with use.

4. Tencel™ Lyocell

Tencel™ is a brand name for lyocell produced by Lenzing.

Lyocell is made from wood pulp and is produced using a closed-loop process in which much of the processing solvent is recovered and reused.

The result is a soft, smooth and breathable fabric.

It is especially useful for dresses, blouses, skirts and flowing garments.

One small warning from me: do not assume that every fabric labelled "lyocell" or "bamboo" automatically has the same environmental credentials. The production process matters.

5. Wool

Wool deserves a place on any serious sustainable fabric list.

It is natural, durable, warm and can last for many years when properly cared for. Wool can also be repaired, reused and eventually recycled.

For historical costumes, LARP and tailored clothing, wool is difficult to beat. Loden, wool flannel, herringbone and tartan can produce beautiful garments that are both practical and authentic.

There is also increasing interest in regenerative wool and regenerative agriculture, where farming practices are designed to improve soil health and biodiversity rather than simply reduce damage.

For me, this is an important distinction: sometimes the most interesting sustainable material is not a futuristic fabric at all, but a very old one produced in a better way.

6. Recycled Cotton

Recycled cotton gives textile waste another life.

Old cotton garments and production scraps can be processed into new fibres. This reduces the need for virgin cotton and helps keep textile waste in circulation.

There is a practical limitation, however. Recycled fibres are often shorter than virgin fibres, which can affect strength and durability. They are therefore frequently blended with other fibres.

Still, when used intelligently, recycled cotton can be a very useful part of a circular textile system.

7. Recycled Polyester

Recycled polyester is made from materials such as used plastic bottles or polyester textile waste.

It can reduce the demand for virgin fossil-based polyester and make use of existing plastic materials. However, I would not call it a perfect solution.

Polyester is still a synthetic fibre and can release microfibres during washing. Recycling plastic into clothing does not make the plastic problem disappear.

For sportswear, outdoor clothing and certain technical applications, recycled polyester can nevertheless be a sensible choice where its performance is genuinely useful.

8. Recycled Nylon

Recycled nylon is another interesting option, particularly for technical fabrics.

ECONYL® is one well-known example. It uses regenerated nylon made from sources such as discarded fishing nets and other nylon waste.

It can be used for swimwear, sportswear, bags and other strong technical products.

Again, the important word is recycled rather than "natural". It is still nylon, but existing material is being given another life.

9. Bamboo Fabrics – With a Question Mark

Bamboo sounds almost too good to be true.

The plant grows very quickly and can require relatively few agricultural inputs. But turning bamboo into a soft fabric is another matter.

Many bamboo textiles are actually rayon or viscose made through a chemical process. So simply seeing the word "bamboo" on a fabric label does not automatically make it sustainable.

This is one of those cases where I would always look beyond the marketing story and check how the fibre was actually produced.

10. Modal and ECOVERO™

Modal and viscose are cellulose-based fibres made from wood pulp.

Some producers have developed much more responsible production systems. LENZING™ ECOVERO™, for example, is a branded viscose fibre designed with lower environmental impact than conventional viscose.

These fabrics are soft and drape beautifully, making them useful for dresses, blouses and lightweight garments.

They are a good example of why sustainability is not simply a matter of "natural versus synthetic". The entire production process matters.

11. Piñatex® & Pineapple Fibre

Now we move into more unusual materials.

Piñatex® is made using fibres from pineapple leaves, which are agricultural by-products.

The idea is clever: instead of growing a separate crop for the material, waste from another agricultural process becomes a useful resource.

These materials have been explored for bags, shoes, accessories and upholstery. But there is an important lesson here too: bio-based does not automatically mean biodegradable or plastic-free. Some alternative leather materials contain coatings or binders that affect their end-of-life properties.

That is why I prefer to look at the complete material rather than simply the word "vegan".

12. Orange Fibre

Yes, oranges can become textiles.

Orange fibre is made from cellulose derived from citrus-processing waste. The idea is particularly appealing because it gives a second life to something that would otherwise be discarded.

The resulting material can have a soft, silk-like character and has been developed for fashion and luxury textiles.

Circular use of food-industry waste is one of the areas I find particularly interesting in textile innovation.

13. Banana Fibre

Banana plants can also provide useful textile fibres.

After harvesting the fruit, parts of the plant that would otherwise become agricultural waste can be used to produce fibres.

Banana fibre can be strong and has been used traditionally in several parts of the world. Modern textile companies are now experimenting with it for contemporary fabrics and accessories.

This is a good reminder that "new" sustainable textiles are not always new inventions. Sometimes the innovation lies in bringing an old material into a modern circular production system.

14. Coffee-Based Textiles

Used coffee grounds have also found their way into textile innovation.

Coffee-based fibres and yarns have been developed for sportswear and outdoor clothing, often with claims relating to odour control, quick drying or UV protection.

I would put these fabrics in the interesting specialist material category rather than calling them a universal replacement for natural fibres. But as someone who loves both sewing and coffee, I admit that turning yesterday's coffee grounds into tomorrow's fabric is rather appealing!

15. Mycelium – Textiles Made With Fungi

This is where sustainable textile development starts to look like science fiction.

Mycelium is the network of fungal fibres that grows underground or through organic material. Researchers and companies are developing mycelium-based materials as alternatives to conventional leather and other materials.

There is serious research happening in this field. European projects have been developing mycelium-based textile materials from industrial residues, including prototypes for fashion and other applications. And the research is continuing. In 2026, scientists have even demonstrated fungal materials with unusual properties such as self-cleaning and self-repairing behaviour.

That does not mean we will all be sewing mushroom dresses next year. Many of these materials are still developing. But they are certainly worth watching.

16. Apple, Grape & Other Food-Waste Materials

Apples, grapes and other agricultural by-products are also being investigated as sources for bio-based materials.

The principle is simple and rather attractive: use something that already exists instead of growing an entirely new crop for the sole purpose of making a material.

There are now many examples of textile and leather alternatives made from food or agricultural waste, including pineapple, banana, apple, grape and coffee-based materials.

The challenge is making these materials durable, affordable and genuinely circular.

That last part is important.

A fabric can be made partly from food waste and still contain fossil-based coatings or other synthetic components. "Made from plants" is therefore not the end of the sustainability conversation.

So What About Algae?

Algae-based textiles are another fascinating area of research.

Algae can grow without using agricultural land in the same way as conventional crops, and researchers are investigating algae-derived materials for fibres, coatings and other textile applications.

Some claims about algae textiles are still based on early-stage development, so I would be careful with statements such as "carbon negative" or "completely biodegradable".

It is an exciting field, but the complete production process still matters.

 

What Is Actually New in 2026?

For me, the most important development is not one particular magical new fabric.

It is the move towards traceability and circularity.

The European Union is working on Digital Product Passports, which are intended to make information about products, materials, durability, repair, recycling and origin more accessible. Textiles and clothing are one of the priority product groups. The specific textile requirements are still being developed, with a planned delegated act for textiles currently expected in 2027.

This could eventually make it much easier to answer questions such as:

Where was this fabric made?

What fibres does it contain?

Can it be repaired?

Can it be recycled?

What happens to it at the end of its life?

And perhaps most importantly:

What am I actually buying?

For sewists, this could be very useful. At the moment, a beautiful fabric label often tells us much less than we would like to know.

Sustainable Does Not Always Mean New

There is something else I think we should remember.

When we talk about sustainable textiles, we sometimes become fascinated by futuristic materials while forgetting the fabrics that have been used successfully for generations. Linen. Wool. Hemp. Cotton. Silk. Good natural fabrics can last a very long time. They can be repaired, altered, reused and sometimes passed on to another person. That matters.

In my own atelier, I still choose fabric primarily according to the project. A historical costume needs to look and behave like a historical costume. A cosplay commission may require something with a particular weight, stretch or appearance. Sometimes a modern technical fabric is simply the right tool for the job. I do not believe in using a "sustainable" fabric just because the label says so.

I would rather make one beautiful, well-made garment that is worn and enjoyed for many years than make three garments from a supposedly perfect fabric that nobody actually wants to wear.

My Sustainable Sewing Checklist

When I buy fabric, I try to ask a few simple questions:

Is it made to last?

Will I actually use it?

Can I repair or alter the finished garment?

Can the fabric be reused later?

Do I know what the fibre actually is?

Can I find reliable information about its production?

And, whenever possible:

Can I buy a good fabric from a European supplier rather than ordering something simply because it is cheap?

Certifications can help too. Depending on the material, useful labels include GOTS, OEKO-TEX® and bluesign®. But even certification should be considered as part of the bigger picture, rather than as a magic green stamp.

The Best Sustainable Fabric?

Perhaps there is no single answer.

The most sustainable fabric is often the one that is well chosen, well made, well cared for and used for a very long time.

That may be an innovative mycelium material in the future. It may be recycled fibre. It may be a new textile made from agricultural waste.

Or it may simply be a beautiful piece of linen that will still be useful twenty years from now. And honestly, I like that idea.

Sustainability does not always have to look futuristic.

Sometimes it looks like good old-fashioned sewing: choosing carefully, making things properly, repairing what can be repaired and keeping a good garment for as long as possible.
