Is Matcha Just a Trend? Why Everyone Loves This Green Tea

Is Matcha Here to Stay? I Think We Have Our Answer!

Yesterday, I went shopping in Germany. Not because I wanted to buy everything in sight or stock up on supplies, but because I live just a stone's throw from the German border. Sometimes, driving to Germany is simply a shorter trip than driving to the nearest Dutch cities.

And with today's high fuel prices? Well, we do the maths!

Anyway, I went to a discount store to buy a few household items. Nothing exciting, just the usual things we all need from time to time.

I found everything on my list, of course. But then came the dangerous part of shopping: the checkout area.

You know what I mean. You have finished shopping, your basket is full, and you are ready to pay. Then -deep sigh- you see something you did not know you needed.

In this case, it was a HUGE refrigerator.

The kind of refrigerator you could practically stand upright inside! A tiny home by itself...

I always enjoy looking inside because this shop sell ready-made drinks there. My usual choice is a latte macchiato in a handy cardboard carton. No bottle to return afterwards. Just drink, enjoy, and recycle the packaging. But yesterday, something made me stop and stare.

Matcha iced coffee. Matcha drinks. Even Hojicha tea in those tempting little cartons!

I was flabbergasted, and that was only the beginning.

Matcha Is Everywhere. I Mean Everywhere!

Earlier in the shop, I had already noticed something interesting.

In the stationery section, there were adorable little notebooks with Matcha printed on them.

Near the cookie tins, I found not only practical coffee and tea tins but also Matcha tins.

Then I walked past the wool section full of Matcha colours!

And the wall decorations?

Matcha here, Matcha there, Matcha everywhere.

I nearly expected to find Matcha-coloured curtains, Matcha cushions, and perhaps even a Matcha-green refrigerator.

In the pet department, I was almost ready to look for Matcha dog biscuits and Matcha toys for cats. All right, I made that last part up. But honestly, it would not have surprised me!

The whole experience left me wondering.

Has Matcha really become popular this quickly, or have I simply started noticing it everywhere because I have fallen in love with it myself?

Perhaps it is a little of both.

From Traditional Japanese Tea to a Worldwide Trend

Matcha is certainly not new. Far from it! This finely ground green tea has a long history in Japan, where it has been enjoyed for centuries, especially as part of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Matcha is made from premium grown green tea leaves. The leaves are dried and ground into a fine powder, which gives Matcha its beautiful green colour and distinctive taste. Unlike ordinary green tea, where you steep the leaves and remove them, Matcha powder is whisked into the water. You drink the whole tea leaves themselves in powdered form. For a long time, Matcha was mainly associated with Japanese tea culture and traditional tea preparation.

Then came Matcha lattes, iced Matcha, Matcha desserts, Matcha cakes, and all kinds of creative drinks.

Social Media helped introduce Matcha to a much wider audience. Its bright green colour looks wonderful in photographs, and it fits perfectly into the world of beautiful food, cosy rituals, and creative lifestyles. Matcha was no longer just a traditional tea. It became an experience and a very fashionable one!

Why Has Matcha Become So Popular?

I think there are several reasons why Matcha has captured so many hearts.

COLOUR

First, there is the colour. Oh, that colour!

Matcha comes in so many beautiful shades of green, from soft and delicate to rich and vibrant. It looks fresh, natural, and wonderfully calming. In a world filled with busy schedules and endless screens, something as simple as a beautiful cup of green tea can feel like a little moment of peace.

TASTE

Then there is the taste. Matcha has a distinctive, earthy flavour that is quite different from coffee or ordinary tea. Some people love it immediately, while others need a little time to appreciate it.

RITUAL

Of course, there is the ritual. Preparing Matcha can be a lovely little pause in your day. You measure the powder, add water, whisk it, and watch the beautiful green colour appear. You can enjoy it hot, cold, with milk, or as a latte. There is something satisfying about turning a few simple ingredients into something beautiful.

SLOW LIVING

Finally, Matcha has become part of a larger trend towards natural colours, mindful moments, and products that make everyday life feel a little more special. This brings me to another important point. Matcha is no longer just about what we drink. It is also about how we live, decorate, create, and express ourselves.

Matcha Is Coming Into Our Homes

At Handmade Luxury Home, we are particularly interested in this creative side of the Matcha trend.

We love beautiful colours, handmade products, and the little details that make a house feel like a home. And Matcha gives us so much inspiration!

We create beautiful wall hangings inspired by the world of Matcha. We make one-cup warmers for Matcha lovers, and we write about this wonderful green tea on our blog.

Why?

Matcha offers endless possibilities for creativity. Think of soft green textiles, beautiful handmade decorations, pretty tea accessories, and cosy corners where you can enjoy your favourite drink. Imagine a little Matcha corner in your kitchen, with a beautiful cup, a handmade cup warmer, a tin of Matcha powder, and perhaps a lovely wall hanging above it. Nothing complicated. Nothing extravagant. Just a small, personal space that makes you smile every time you use it.

That is what handmade products can do. They add warmth, character, and a little bit of personality to everyday life. And Matcha fits beautifully into that idea.

Why Matcha Is More Fun Than Your Usual Cup of Coffee

Now, I have nothing against coffee. Quite the opposite! I enjoy coffee, and a good latte macchiato is always welcome. But let us be honest for a moment. Coffee is usually brown. Tea is often brown. A latte macchiato is mostly cream-coloured with lovely layers of coffee. Beautiful, of course.

But Matcha? Matcha brings colour to the table! Its green shades work wonderfully with natural fabrics, wood, ceramics, and other earthy materials. They can look fresh and modern, but also soft, elegant, and timeless. Because Matcha has become so popular, there are endless opportunities to combine it with handmade creations.

You can experiment with different shades of green, add cream or beige accents, or create something bold and colourful. For makers and artists, that is a wonderful source of inspiration. For people who love Matcha, it is a chance to bring a little piece of their favourite ritual into their homes. For those who simply enjoy beautiful things?

Well, you do not even have to drink Matcha to appreciate its hue!

Although, between you and me, drinking it makes the experience even better.

Is Matcha Just Another Passing Hype?

Now we arrive at the big question. Is Matcha here to stay, or will we soon find ourselves looking at the next fashionable drink? Trends come and go. We have seen it happen with all kinds of foods, drinks, colours, and lifestyle products. One day, everyone seems to want something. A few months later, nobody talks about it anymore.

So why do I think Matcha has a good chance of staying with us? Matcha has something that many fashionable products do not have: a long cultural history and an established tradition. It is not a drink invented last Tuesday by someone looking for the next big thing.

VERSATILITY

Matcha is versatile. You can drink it traditionally, turn it into a latte, use it in baking, or experiment with new recipes.

It also appeals to different kinds of people. Tea lovers enjoy it for its flavour, creative people love its colour, and those who enjoy a mindful daily ritual appreciate the preparation.

Finally, Matcha has moved beyond the cup. When a trend inspires home accessories, textiles, stationery, recipes, and handmade products, it has found its way into several parts of everyday life.

Of course, nobody can predict exactly how popular Matcha will remain in the years to come.

Perhaps the number of Matcha-branded products will eventually decrease. Perhaps the next big drink will arrive and take over some of the attention. Nonetheless, I expect Matcha itself is here to stay.

It has too much history, too many possibilities, and far too beautiful a colour to disappear completely.

Even if the hype becomes quieter, that does not mean people will stop enjoying it.

Sometimes, the best trends are the ones that eventually become part of everyday life.

At Handmade Luxury Home, We Are Staying Green!

For us, Matcha is more than a fashionable drink. It is a source of inspiration.

We love exploring its colours, creating handmade products around it, and sharing ideas with people who appreciate the beauty of everyday rituals.

A wall hanging can bring a little colour to a room. A one-cup warmer can make your favourite tea moment feel extra special. And a good Matcha recipe can turn an ordinary afternoon into something worth looking forward to. These are small things, but small things often make life more enjoyable and that is exactly what we love about handmade living. For us, that means beautiful materials, creative projects, and, yes, a healthy dose of Matcha green!

Back From Germany

I went to Germany for a few ordinary household essentials and came home with a fresh reminder of just how much Matcha has taken over the world.

My verdict? Matcha is here, Matcha is green, and Matcha has certainly found a home at Handmade Luxury Home.

Now, if you will excuse me, I think it is time to make myself a lovely cup of Matcha.

After all, someone has to keep the trend alive! 🍵💚
